AIIMS New Delhi is India's premier public medical institution — a Parliament-established institute that combines the country's most competitive medical college, its largest research output, and a referral hospital of last resort that treats patients from every state.

Virtually every speciality and super-speciality exists on campus, including dedicated centres for cardiothoracic sciences, neurosciences, cancer (the NCI/IRCH), ophthalmology (RP Centre), trauma (JPN Apex Trauma Centre) and mother & child care. Treatment costs are nominal, which drives enormous OPD volumes — appointments are booked online through the ORS portal, and early registration is essential.

For South Delhi, AIIMS at Ansari Nagar (with Safdarjung Hospital across the road) forms the city's most important public-health anchor, directly on the Yellow Line at the AIIMS metro station.
